TAIPEI, Taiwan -- An elderly homeless man was found dead in an abandoned
house in the eastern county of Hualilen yesterday. Police said he might have
frozen to death.

Residents near the abandoned house found the man yesterday morning and
reported the death to the police immediately. The man was later identified
to be a 68 year-old man surnamed Yang, police said.

Officers on the scene said they found no signs of a murder and said he might
have died from a loss of body temperature in the cold weather, concluding
that real cause of death will be determined after an autopsy is conducted.

A cold mass is currently affecting Taiwan, with low temperatures in the
north falling to below 10 degrees Celsius. Social workers are urging senior
citizens, especially those living alone, to keep warm.
