Homeless mag aims to run in the black in '08

The Japanese version of Big Issue, a magazine aimed at supporting =
homeless people, has posted profits since October thanks to a price =
increase after running in the red from the time it was launched in 2003, =
its publisher said.

"We want to boost circulation further by recruiting more homeless people =
as sellers and continuing to improve the magazine's content," said Shoji =
Sano, 66, a representative of Big Issue Japan Ltd.

The magazine, which originated in Britain, is published twice a month in =
Japan and covers a broad range of topics, including business, social =
affairs and entertainment. It currently has a circulation of 29,000 =
copies. About 120 homeless people engage in sales activities around =
Japan.

Since its launch, the Osaka-based publisher has suffered cumulative =
losses of about =A550 million. But each edition has been profitable =
since the price was raised to =A5300 from =A5200 with the Oct. 15 =
edition, it said.

"Although sales have become slow since the price hike, my income still =
went up by about 10 percent and I would like to somehow rent an =
apartment," said Takashi Koizumi, 56, one homeless seller, adding he =
needs to get an address before he can apply for a job.

According to the publisher, homeless people can earn =A5160 per copy, up =
from =A5110 before the price increase, and their earnings per day now =
come to around =A53,200 to =A54,000 by selling 20 to 25 copies.

The publisher said nearly 20 percent of Big Issue's readers are women in =
their 20s, constituting the largest group
