Three charged after fires are set in Swepsonville
By Roselee Papandrea/Times-News=20

December 24, 2007=20

Three people were charged in connection to fires set at two businesses =
on N.C. 54 in the Swepsonville area early Monday.=20

Nathan Vernon Teer, 25, of Stanford Road, Chapel Hill, Jerry James =
Fletcher, 22, whose address is listed as the homeless shelter on Fisher =
Street in Burlington, and a 15-year-old juvenile, whose name wasn't =
released, were all charged with burning personal property, breaking and =
entering, breaking and entering a motor vehicle, misdemeanor larceny, =
and burning an unoccupied building, according to an Alamance County =
Sheriffs Department news release.=20

Teer, Fletcher and the juvenile were "randomly setting fires on N.C. 54 =
between Graham and Chapel Hill," said Randy Jones, spokesman for the =
sheriff's department.=20

Swepsonville Fire Department and the sheriff's department were called at =
about 2:50 a.m. because two vans and a dumpster at Creative Child Care =
at 3216 N.C. 54 were on fire.=20

While firefighters were at that fire, a passer-by stopped to inform them =
that there was smoke coming from Oasis Lounge at 3960 N.C. 54, said =
Jonathan Gordon, a firefighter with Swepsonville Fire Department.=20

"There was heavy smoke coming from that building," Gordon said. "Most of =
the fire was from the rear of the building and pretty much contained to =
the rear. It didn't take long to put out the initial fire but to do =
salvage and overhaul took awhile."=20

No one was injured in either fire. There was about $60,000 in damages to =
the day care center and $70,000 to Oasis Lounge, according to the =
release. What was used to start the fires is still under investigation =
by the Alamance County Fire Marshal's office.=20

A witness at Creative Child Care told authorities that a burgundy Ford =
Taurus occupied by three men was seen at the day care center. A vehicle =
description was given to deputies. Sgt. Jimmy Hinshaw of the sheriff's =
department observed a similar vehicle traveling on N.C. 54, according to =
the news release.=20

"He conducted a traffic stop of the suspects on (N.C.) 54 near George =
Bason Road," the release states. "The witness was brought to the scene =
and positively identified the vehicles."=20

Teer, Fletcher and the juvenile were detained. They allegedly "admitted =
to their involvement in the fires," according to the release.=20

Following an investigation, authorities also discovered that the three =
suspects had charges pending in Orange County connected to other fires, =
thefts and malicious damage, according to the release.=20

Teer and Fletcher were placed in the Alamance County jail. Teer is under =
$41,000 bond and Fletcher under a $40,000 bond. The 15-year-old was =
taken to a juvenile detention center in another county.=20

There was a house fire in Swepsonville early Sunday on Mount Willen =
Road. The cause of that fire is still under investigation. Jones didn't =
have any information to indicate that fire was connected to the Monday =
morning business fires.=20
