Holiday Wish

Dear Loaves & Fishes Supporter,

=20

I couldn't think of a lovelier Holiday Wish than the one below. It was =
written by Gerry Maciulla, a homeless man who was recently hired =
part-time to manage our Day Storage=20

program. He has been homeless for ten years. =20

Reflections: One people on our one planet

Wednesday, December 19, 2007
This holiday season The Bee's editorial board asked local residents this =
question, "What is the most important lesson that Sacramento or the =
region should take from 2007, and how can it be applied next year?"

The following is from Gerard Maciulla, unofficial mayor of Friendship =
Park at Sacramento's Loaves & Fishes, a homeless aid organization:

The greatest lesson from 2007, not only for Sacramento but for the =
globe, is to learn that we are all one people on our one planet.=20

We have some challenges ahead of us with Earth. It will be necessary for =
us to recognize our oneness so that we can approach these problem areas =
most effectively. Global warming is terrifying to me. How could we be so =
careless as to create a problem of that magnitude?=20

We need a gentle dismantling of systems that have proven to be =
detrimental to Earth and its people. We should also do what we can as =
individuals: take light rail instead of your car, recycle, grow an =
organic vegetable garden.

Even though I'm homeless, I'm very wealthy because I have friends who =
love me, Loaves & Fishes to help me and the physical beauty of =
Sacramento to enjoy. I think Sacramento is the greatest place on Earth =
with its wonderful climate and two magnificent rivers. Even before the =
white man came, Native Americans held the region in great esteem, and we =
should do the same. The region blesses us; let's work on blessing it =
back. In Sacramento, everything flows down to the river. So let's be =
mindful of that.

Being homeless in 2007 has taught me the value of calmness. Some of my =
experiences out there have been quite harrowing, but the best approach =
to dealing with them is a calm mind. You can think better if you're not =
panicky.=20

My hope for 2008 is that all of us in Sacramento will achieve calmness =
of mind and cherish our connections to each other.
