Three Ottawa homeless shelters have sent a letter to the courts asking =
them not to send back people who have been charged with drug-related =
offences.

The request was sent out after 65 people were arrested and charged with =
265 offences during a recent police crackdown on street crime.

Diane Morrison, head of the Ottawa Mission, said her shelter, the =
Salvation Army and Shepherds of Good Hope sent the letter for two =
reasons.

"One: it's a real safety issue for our very vulnerable people in the =
shelter," she said. "And number two, it would be much better if the drug =
traffickers, if they were addicted, get some help."

People are often ordered by the courts to live at one of the shelters, =
she said.

According to the Ottawa police, most of those arrested during the recent =
crackdown were charged with drug-related offences, and most will be =
tried in court or in drug treatment court in January. In the meantime, =
all but three have been released.
