Personal comment: the 3 big shelters (for men) already get close to $12 mil=
lions and are asking for $3.7 millions more for 548 beds which are not full=
every night. At that price, we, taxpayers, strongly suggest that the homel=
ess be housed in hotels and motels around Montreal on the coldest nights of=
winter. At $78.49 a night, I am sure we can also get a meal.

Montreal's three biggest homeless shelters said yesterday they won't have t=
o close any beds this winter, after they received an additional $1.035 mill=
ion in provincial government funding.
"Winter has begun and that's when we start to fill up," said James Hughes, =
executive director of the Old Brewery Mission.
"We want to be able to offer a bed and a meal to any Montrealer who needs i=
t."
The $1.035 million will nearly match the $1.3 million Quebec is already con=
tributing to the Old Brewery Mission, the Maison du P=E8re and the Welcome =
Hall Mission.
The $1.3 million represents about 10 per cent of the shelters' combined bud=
gets of nearly $12 million. The other 90 per cent comes from private donati=
ons.
While the directors of the homeless shelters welcomed the additional money,=
they say they still need more.
The shelters have been asking Quebec for $3.7 million more a year, which wo=
uld be recurring and indexed to inflation, to cover the costs of providing =
a combined 548 beds and meals overnight in their shelters.
Provincial Health and Social Services Minister Philippe Couillard approved =
the $1.035 million in additional funding last month after meeting with the =
shelters' directors.
"While we deem the $1.035 million in funding to be inadequate, we recognize=
it as a gesture of goodwill and good faith ... and we are confident the si=
tuation is going to improve," Hughes said yesterday.
The directors of the three shelters will rejoin a committee that co-ordinat=
es wintertime emergency services, Hughes said. The directors quit the commi=
ttee in October after they and the government reached an impasse over fundi=
ng.
Hughes said he is also happy the government has set up a new committee, hea=
ded by Notre Dame de Gr=E2ce MNA Russell Copeman, to address the issue of f=
unding for homeless shelters.
"We take it as a signal that they mean business and are going to provide mo=
re funding," he said.
During the season's first snowstorm on Monday night, the Old Brewery Missio=
n was 91 per cent full.
