A 59-year-old man accused of setting a Northwest Side home on fire =
Friday told detectives he did it because he was tired of homeless people =
using it as a "flophouse."=20
The Northwest Fire/Rescue District went to the home in the 2700 block of =
West Palmyra Street, near West River Road and North La Cholla Boulevard, =
around 5 p.m. Friday after receiving a 911 call, said Katy Heiden, a =
district spokeswoman.=20
The fire was extinguished in four minutes, she said, and no injuries =
were reported.=20
Witnesses told Pima County Sheriff's Department detectives that a man =
was seen breaking into the home, then leaving in a red truck, according =
to a report. Soon after the man left, they saw smoke coming from the =
residence.=20
When detectives interviewed a next-door neighbor, the woman told them =
that she had notified her roommate, Daniel Lewis Purcell, of a noise she =
heard coming from the vacant home, the report stated.=20
Purcell went to check out the noise but came back and told the woman to =
call 911 because there was a fire inside, the report said. Purcell then =
grabbed a case of beer and went to a friend's house, according to the =
report.=20
After returning to his home at the request of detectives, Purcell told =
the same story his roommate told. However, after a second interview, he =
admitted breaking in and setting the residence on fire by throwing a =
match on a mattress, according to the report.=20
"He found the matches laying on the mattress and since he was already =
inside, he decided to set the place on fire," the report stated. "His =
reasoning was due to the fact that he and neighbors were tired of the =
transient drug users that were using the residence as a flophouse."=20
Purcell was booked into the Pima County jail on charges including =
possession of burglary tools, second-degree burglary, criminal damage =
and arson. He is being held on $100,000 bond.=20
