      Dec 01 2006=20

Petra Moorehouse understands there's no easy solution to finding =
places to live for the growing number of homeless people in New =
Westminster and the region. So she decided to take the first step.=20

Moorehouse is collecting mittens, socks and toques for the =
homeless. So far she has about 450 items bought mostly with her own =
money and some donated. Her goal is 600 to 900 and she's got a week to =
go.=20

The plan is to give out more than 300 bags to the homeless and =
needy attending the annual Union Gospel Mission Christmas dinner in New =
Westminster Dec. 9. Each bag will include a pair of gloves, socks, a =
toque and anything else that can benefit people.=20

"I do a tremendous amount of volunteer work for other =
organizations. But I've let some of them go by the wayside because =
there's some things that are important to me. This was my project for =
myself for the year," she said.=20

Moorehouse chose to help the homeless because it became obvious to =
her that it was a growing problem. One of the more recent counts of =
homeless people estimates there are 90 individuals in New West. But =
those who work with the homeless say the number could be double that.=20

This week at the Salvation Army emergency cold weather shelter, =
there were a total of 138 overnight guests from Saturday to Thursday.=20

"I've been noticing that there's more and more homeless in New =
West. We've lived here for more than 10 years in this location and every =
year I see more and more and it's frustrating," she said.=20

Moorehouse spent time this summer volunteering at the Union =
Gospel, helping serve up the free meal they offer. She also got to know =
some of the "regulars" in her neighbourhood.=20

"I've seen so many homeless, I've seen it in the news, read it in =
the papers, it's constant, every day. So I thought I would do my part =
and start something. I'm going to start a project for myself.=20

Governments, she said, aren't addressing the homeless problem and =
she finds that frustrating. In some cases, like the city of Burnaby, =
they say homelessness is a provincial or federal problem. The truth is, =
said Moorehouse, its everyone's problem. And that's the fundamental =
reason she chose to take direct action.=20

"All levels of government don't seem to care. They just push it =
from one level on to another level. Then they don't want to do anything =
about it and they say 'Not our problem.' They sweep it under the =
carpet," she said.=20

Moorehouse, an employee with a local credit union, walks and talks =
with homeless individuals on her daily commute.=20

"It irritates me that people have to live that way in society when =
we have so much. I don't get that. If people don't take care of people, =
then who will? What's our purpose?=20

      "It's not just the government's responsibility, it's everyone's =
problem."=20

It would be easy for the New Westminster woman to reach her goal =
if she went to the local thrift stores and bought the mittens, socks and =
toques second-hand but that's not part of her plan.=20

"I've said to people I want the items to be nice and warm and I =
also want them to be brand new. If I was receiving them I would want =
them new - for the hygiene."=20

In asking for donations from individuals and businesses, =
Moorehouse has encountered various negative opinions about the homeless. =
Her reply is a simple one.=20

"There's a lot of different scenarios [that lead to people =
becoming homeless]. Yes you have your drug addicts. Yes you have your =
mentally ill and yes you have people without families and no where to =
go. But the important thing is that they're people. To me that's all =
that matters," she said.=20

"They're no different than you and me. They get hot, they get =
cold, hungry, they feel pain."=20

People wanting to help with the project are asked to buy new =
mittens, socks and toques and then give them to Moorehouse. She doesn't =
want cash donations because she won't have the time to give out receipts =
to those who donate. She can be reached at 604-525-5878.=20
