Burns: What a town without pity can do

By Joe Burns/ Who Cares

Thursday, August 31, 2006=20

Sandwich selectmen are making progress in their campaign to turn their =
town into the new Hazleton.

    =20

Like the Pennsylvania town that gained national notoriety for its =
anti-illegal immigrant legislation, Sandwich has set its sites on =
standing up for its rights and whites. Hazleton blamed a large increase =
in its Hispanic population, both legal and illegal, for increased crime, =
failing schools and a lowering of the quality of life.

    =20

While that sounds like Racism 101, even if it were so, it isn't an =
argument on which Sandwich can fall back. The last time we looked, =
Sandwich was still whiter than Wonder Bread, and it was blaming problems =
in its school system on the state government for not giving it enough =
money.=20

    =20

As for the illegal immigrant crime wave, it seems to consist of an =
undocumented immigrant, who may or may not have worked in Sandwich, =
crashing a car into a utility pole last week while under the influence =
of alcohol.

    =20

Selectman Doug Dexter, who's leading the effort to stop what he =
called "the greatest threat in America's history," wanted to fine local =
businesses that hired undocumented immigrants. But he and his fellow =
selectmen, who supported him unanimously, were told to curb their =
enthusiasm by the town attorney.

    =20

While the home-rule petition that will be presented to Sandwich =
selectmen Sept. 7 is missing a few teeth after the attorney got his =
hands on the original proposal, it still has enough bite to make =
Sandwich businessmen beware. The proposal would require that Sandwich =
businesses seeking licenses or license renewals certify that have never =
been found in violation of federal laws that prohibit the hiring of =
illegal immigrants.

    =20

One can only wonder why, with all the real problems Sandwich needs =
to deal with, selectmen are focusing on an issue that likely has =
miniscule impact on the lives of townspeople if it has any affect at =
all. Surely they can make better use of their legal resources than =
putting them toward what amounts to a symbolic gesture that is =
simplistic and short-sighted. But common sense and conservatism aren't =
exactly synonyms.

    =20

If Sandwich selectmen approve the petition - which, judging by their =
response to the earlier, more punitive measure, they seem likely to do - =
it will go before a town meeting Sept 27. And since the town voted these =
defenders of American values into office, there's a good chance voters =
will follow suit.

    =20

Sandwich, which already earned the Gene Pitney Town Without Pity =
Award for its fight to keep Dana's Fields, a communal complex designed =
to help homeless individuals regain their place in society, from being =
built, may soon be adding to its reputation for intolerance.

    =20

The animosity exhibited toward undocumented workers seems odd coming =
from people whose closets are filled with clothing manufactured in third =
world countries where low wages and abominable working conditions are =
the rule. Illegal immigrant workers are the third world at our doorstep. =
The only difference between the two is that illegal immigrants return a =
significant portion of what little they earn back to our communities and =
state and federal governments through purchases and taxes
