      Helping homeless kids
      get back to school=20
    =20

    =20
      BY JOYCE SHELBY=20
    =20
          =20
Holding school supplies they have collected, Gisell Nakhid =
(l.) and Mavis Theodore of Newkirk Ave. Neighborhood Association flank =
Raymond Lafontant of HGI Foundation. =20
          =20
Mavis Theodore and and a group of Flatbush activists have a lot of =
shopping to do in the next few weeks - and none of it is for themselves. =

The Newkirk Avenue Neighborhood Association members must finish =
buying school supplies for 1,300 kids in Brooklyn's homeless shelters by =
Aug.19.=20

They've already gotten needed backpacks, dictionaries, calculators =
and loose-leaf paper, but still must get crayons, glue sticks, pencil =
sharpeners and other items the children will need.=20

That means one thing for the association: They've got more =
fund-raising to do.=20

"Each year, there seem to be more and more children in the =
shelters who need our help," said Theodore, who began the project in =
2001 and helped 600 kids that year. The expanded project is now =
cosponsored by Flatbush Development Corporation.=20

To fill kids' backpacks, the neighborhood association is appealing =
to the public as well as to the companies that employ its members.=20

Theodore's bosses at John Wiley & Sons gave 1,000 dictionaries and =
will match employees' contributions. Another association member, Audrey =
Isaacs-Brown, got $2,000 from her employers, Lazard Freres and Co. and =
Lazard Capital Markets.=20

By passing out flyers, the group caught the attention of Wall =
Street trader and Flatbush resident Raymond Lafontant.=20

He's a member of HGI Foundation, comprised of a small group of men =
who work on Wall Street and help needy children. The foundation will =
spend up to $10,000 on backpacks.=20

"This is a great cause," Lafontant said. "If you live in a =
homeless shelter, you're off to a rough start. If someone can give you a =
little bit of sunshine, hopefully you'll have a good school year."=20

Appreciative responses from children make the project worthwhile =
every year, Theodore said.=20

"One child sent me a pack of M&Ms," Theodore said. "I still have =
it."=20

A little girl named Latisha, who never met Theodore in person, =
wrote: "You're pretty. How are you doing? I love you."=20

"That was the sweetest little letter," Theodore said. "I still =
smile every time I read it."=20

The Newkirk Area Neighborhood Association will prepare bookbags =
for distribution on Aug. 19. Send funds to help fill them to: NANA c/o =
Flatbush Development Corp., 1616 Newkirk Ave., Brooklyn, NY 11226.=20
