Katrina Residents Move Ahead of Local Homeless on Housing List

Washington D.C. (AP) - Hurricane survivors from New Orleans will be bumped
ahead of D.C. area residents on waiting lists to move into public or
subsidized housing.

The D.C. Housing Authority and other area governments are making the
arrangements in response to a request from the U.S. Department of Housing
and Urban Development.

A HUD spokeswoman tell The Washington Post that the situation of Katrina
evacuees supersedes everything. About 40,000 people are on the waiting list
for housing vouchers in the District, and 30,000 people are on the waiting
list for public housing units.

The D.C. Housing Authority's executive director says 29 public housing units
are vacant, but the agency doesn't plan to set them all aside for storm
survivors.

Storm survivors are also being given priority for public housing slots in
Montgomery County (website - news) , where there are more than 10,000 names
on a waiting list and Fairfax County (website - news) , with a waiting list
of more than 6,000.
