Homeless man arrested in connection with rape

Police arrested a homeless man Thursday, 20 minutes after they say he raped
a woman on Savannah's westside.
The Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department received a call
reporting the assault around 7:20 a.m., police spokesman Sgt. Mike Wilson
Officers arrived to find a woman in her 40s in the parking lot of Creative
Stone on Louisville Road, Wilson said.
"She was crying for an officer," Wilson said. "The woman said she was raped
by another homeless person and gave a description."
Police searched the area and found Charles Keller Johnson sleeping in his
tent in the woods behind the 400 block of Magazine Avenue.
Special victims detectives interviewed Johnson and linked him to the attack.
Police arrested Johnson, 41, on a rape charge and took him to the Chatham
County jail.
The woman was treated at Candler Hospital.
The victim told detectives she lived in the area along with several other
homeless people, including Johnson.
