Name-calling leads homeless man to murder fellow vagrant, police say

 July 29, 2005

Detectives from the Broward Sheriff's Office have charged a homeless man
with the murder of a vagrant behind a grocery store in Pompano Beach

Here is what BSO Public Information Officer Jim Leljedal says led to the

Deputies were called to the 800 block of Hammondville Road shortly before 9
a.m. on Friday after the body of a homeless man was found behind the Star
Net grocery store. Another homeless man, who was actually responsible for
the killing notified authorities.

Detectives observed some obvious signs of trauma on the victim, indicating
that he had sustained a severe beating prior to his death. The Broward
Medical Examiner responded to the scene and confirmed that the victim had
sustained blunt head trauma.

As part of their investigation, detectives questioned the homeless man who
said he found the body. Lewis Bausch, 37, eventually gave a statement to
investigators, admitting his involvement in the slaying and saying the
killing stemmed from an argument over name-calling. Bausch admitted that he
beat the victim, Dennis Miller, 47, with a wooden chair leg, striking him
over the head and on other parts of his body.

Bausch is being charged with murder and will be held without bond in BSO's
main jail.
