Number of invisible homeless on rise in northwest Indiana
July 18, 2005 (VALPARAISO, Ind.) —
Officials say the number people who do not have their own places to live is
on the rise in northwestern Indiana.
But instead of living on the streets, in cardboard boxes, or in cars, these
homeless people stay with friends, family or charitable strangers.
Caroline Shook, director of Housing Opportunities Incorporated in
Valparaiso, told The Times of Munster for a story Sunday that seven out of
10 callers seeking assistance over a two-week informal survey period fit
this nomadic description.
Common scenarios include families forced to live in different households and
kids bouncing from home to home.
