Moore given 20 years for killing homeless man
By Mike McWilliams
Iowa City Press-Citizen
A homeless man accused of beating another man to death last year under an
Iowa City bridge was sentenced to 20 years in prison Thursday.
Prior to the sentence, Stephen Lawrence Moore, 35, pleaded guilty to
voluntary manslaughter and second-degree robbery in connection with the
beating death of John Stewart on March 10 under a bridge in the 500 block of
South Gilbert Street.
Moore was originally charged with first-degree murder. However, the plea
agreement called for Moore to plead guilty to the lesser voluntary
manslaughter and robbery charges. Attorneys in the case agreed to the
sentencing recommendations, which called for the maximum consecutive 10-year
prison terms on each count with suspended fines.
Judge Douglas Russell also ordered Moore to pay $150,000 in restitution to
Peggy Stewart. Moore will be eligible for parole after serving 70 percent of
his sentence. Moore's attorneys said there will be no appeal.
