New TB case found in hostel

A TUBERCULOSIS testing blitz has uncovered a new case of the disease in
Toronto's hostel system. Dr. Barbara Jaffe, of the city's public health
department, said yesterday that a resident at the Seaton House hostel
was recently diagnosed with TB.

"He was identified very early in the course of the illness. He had no
symptoms," said Jaffe, who described the man as "minimally infectious."

The health department has tested about 1,100 people since two workers at
the Maxwell Meighen men's shelter on Sherbourne St. were deemed earlier
this month to have contracted active TB.

Four other staff tested positive but did not fall ill.

Jaffe said health officials do not believe the man most recently
diagnosed was the source of the infections.

He is now in hospital and will receive medication for a minimum of six

Toronto's health department typically deals with as many as 15 cases a year.

Testing will continue in the hostel system
