CAPE TOWN

Shack fire leaves hundreds homeless

Sun, 23 May 2004

Hundreds of people were left homeless following a fire at the Joe Slovo
settlement in Langa, Cape Town, emergency services said on Sunday.

Cape Town Fire and Emergency Services spokesperson Mervyn Nefdt said 150
shacks had been razed and an estimated 450 people had been left without
shelter.

Thirty emergency workers with five engines and three water tenders were sent
to the scene of the blaze, which was first reported after 9.30pm on Saturday
and had been extinguished by 1.15am on Sunday.

The fire had been fuelled by a strong wind and its exact cause had not yet
been pinpointed, Nefdt said.

Those left homeless were being attended to by social services and the city's
disaster management team. They would be accommodated in community halls in
the short term.
