Cost To Rent Means Earning Three Times Minimum Wage

Group Calls New Hampshire One Of Least Affordable States

September 8, 2003

CONCORD, N.H. -- Advocates for the poor said Monday residents must make
$16.49 an hour to rent a modest, two-bedroom home in New Hampshire.

The American Friends Service Committee released its calculation of the
"housing wage" -- what a person working full time has to earn to afford a
two-bedroom unit without paying more than 30 percent of income in rent.

The group estimated that 48 percent of renters can't afford modest rental
housing.

The group said a study by the National Low Income Housing Coalition ranks
New Hampshire the ninth least affordable state.
