Good samaritan gets warning from Longueuil

A Good Samaritan in Longueuil says he will continue to feed poor and 
homeless people, in spite of a warning letter from the city.

A month ago, the city’s permits and inspections department ordered Sylvain 
Lafranchise to stop using his house as a community kitchen.

The deadline to cease and desist was Friday, but Lafranchise, a welfare 
recipient who lives in a modest Prévost St. Bungalow with his wife, Chantal, 
seven children and two boarders, claims it’s all a pretext.

Lafranchise said Thursday he never operated a community kitchen in the 
house, but used it to store and cook food that was later distributed at 
Place Emilie Gamelin, at Ste.Catherine and Berri Sts. In Montreal.

He claimed other social organizations, not neighbours, were trying to put a 
stop to his food distribution activities in what they consider their 

Longueuil officials insisted they were responding to complaints from 
neighbours about all the traffic in an area zoned residential.  Lafranchise 
said he did all the pickups and deliveries with his own van.

Lafranchise contends the real reason the city is trying to shut him down is 
his involvement in a demonstration and feed-in that took place Friday in
