TENTING FOR HOMELESS AWARENESS/Providence, RI

Please join us for an overnight tent vigil on the State House Lawn, One =
Francis Street, 3 p.m., Wednesday, July 23.

Even in July there are still individuals and families struggling to find =
housing. The lack of decent, safe and affordable housing is at a crisis =
for many low-income families. =20

When offered help and the opportunity for low-cost housing homeless =
families and individuals do move on to raise their children, work in the =
community, go to school and volunteer to assist others in need. Today, =
the average homeless person is a child, most likely of kindergarten age. =
A whole generation of children are being raised in emergency shelters, =
and lack the stability of a home. Emergency shelters were never meant =
to be permanent homes for individuals and children.

Please join us in raising awareness around issues facing homeless people =
and to stop the criminalization of those without housing. =20

The Governor and State Legislature of RI recognized the need for housing =
and secured $10 million dollars for the Neighborhood Opportunities =
Program (NOP). The NOP over the last year assisted in building one =
hundred units of housing for low-income individuals and families. This =
year the Governor has included $5 million dollars to fund the NOP.
