This is an excellent link to have. Thanks Harmony. This group will be exactly what I have been looking for in homelessness and survival.
On living out of a car I have done that. In many ways I love it. Station Wagons are great for the room. But my small car was good as well except for streching out.
I was in Texas when I found that I was homeless and had no where to go and no money to back it up. Just a car and lots of books.
I spent one month in the car in someones driveway. Finally I let her talk me into coming in the house and sleeping on the floor. I should have stayed in the car.
When I left her house I drove my car to where the homeless camped out and slept on the ground. I will not often go to shelters. They are right I HATE rules. I was 50 and had lived in a 16 room house with one husband and four children. I did not become 4 or 5. I had just become poor.
No drinking or drugs. Not insane, Not needing a mother or parents to run my life I choose the car or the outside.
I was one of the lucky homeless as I seemed to be able to go in places or do things the homeless were not able to get into.
Others seemed to see me different than the "homeless." That is why when I had a place I decided to go on a long walk and give talks.
As you see me apart from the image of homeless then I want you to know there are others like me who will fit the standards of society except for being poor.
If you can take me in to listen to me talk then you can go in and find others who will be just as good to listen to. If each person would go find someone to offer their humaness to then we would not have a homeless problem.
Oh well, as my daughters would say, "Mom, you are speaking to the chior."

this is Karen's site (the one I was thinking of in connection with
HKU):

Karen's Homeless Prevention Project-HomelessEast.org
http://www.homelesseast.org/

On her site are section devoted to Learning, and Surviving-

she just emailed me with the idea to develop a section on "saving $$"
for poor and homeless people.
