Homeless Shelter Closing Months Before New Building Tenants Arrive
By Staff Writers - ABC 7 TV News - December 08, 2003
Washington (AP) - As a D.C. homeless shelter prepares to
close, homeless advocates are asking - what's the rush?
The Gales Shelter and its 150 beds will close December 19th.
It will become the home of the D.C. Children's Advocacy
Center, but not for several months and not until massive
renovations are done to the building.
D.C. Council Member Jim Graham says if that's the case, then
the shelter should remain open at least through the winter
for the people who fill it to capacity almost every night.
A new men's shelter will open on New York Avenue in
Northeast, more than two miles from the Gales site.
Some of the homeless say they won't go there because it's
too far away from their food and medical services downtown,
and they can't afford bus or taxi fare.
