 THE BEST OLYMPICS EVER? SOCIAL IMPACTS OF SYDNEY 2000

 When the 2000 Olympics ended, International Olympic Committee president
Juan Antonio Samaranch predictably proclaimed Sydney 2000 to be the "best
ever" Olympics. The purpose of this book is to disclose what the Sydney
2000 Olympic industry suppressed - the real Olympic costs and impacts.
These include:

 - the role of the mass media in organizing support for the Olympic
industry;
- the criminalization of disadvantage and dissent through draconian
legislation;
- Sydney 2000's "symbolic reconciliation" efforts in light of 212 years of
Indigenous people's suffering;
- the forgotten victims of the housing and homelessness crisis;
- the Olympic industry's cooptation of universities;
- the unrecognized efforts of community organizations to address social
problems exacerbated by Sydney 2000;
- the tireless activism of community groups in raising social and
environmental issues.
