ADEQUATE INCOME

Homeless Prevention Group wants to have a store, a Poverty Museum. It will be a two months exhibit. THis planned display on Poverty is thought to be a first of a kind gathering of old stuff, of its kind. Its aim is to help people understand that homelessness and poverty has been with us since the dawn of person-kind.

Seek Items demonstrating what being down on your luck feels like, to be donated. Such as stories from newspaper articles today and as far back as the 1600ís in America. Rules on colonial welfare. People who have written on welfare, or poverty to donate books and say a cot or woven strings from a homeless shelter hammock of the 1890ís or so. Passes in and out of poor houses or work houses.

Also seek two month store rent, cases, plagues, publicity for the two month display, etc. Plus a modest stipend for the person gathering the gist, of the display. And volunteers to staff the display in Waterville area.

Any object which shows poverty, that is a struggle economically. The miscellany can be from Maine and the USA, as well as Europe. As a notice of eviction around 1920, Foreclosure Notice in 1890ís, Meal ticket, sugar rationing in WWII , legal notice of work house participation. election pins, etc.

If you have something as a tattled dress which was your grandmaís only dress, and the other children laughed at her or just pointed to her when her teacher told a story of a girl who claimed to have a closet fill of dressís, yet wore the same dress day after day. And of course the girl in the fictional story drew the dresses, and became a designer. Or a boy who only had two sets of clothes and was beat up.

Send the items to: Hospitality House Inc. PO Box 62, Hinckley, ME. 04944. Phone 1-800-438-3890
