Newborn found dead near an encampment along the Guadeloupe River;
homeless mother held

Police are investigating the death of a newborn boy whose body was found late
Monday near an encampment along the Guadeloupe River near Highway 87 in San

The baby's 39-year-old mother was in good condition Tuesday evening at Valley
Medical Center, a spokesman said. Police said she appeared to be in shock when
officers found her near Willow Street and McLellan Avenue about 11:15 p.m.

Police searched the area and found the baby's body in a wooded area nearby.

San Jose police said they are holding the woman on a parole violation while they
gather information about the baby's death.

It will be several weeks before test results will be available to show how and
why the baby died, said Dr. Gregory Schmunk, Santa Clara County's chief medical

Police said they believe the infant was born Monday. They dispatched officers
after someone called late that night to report a woman had given birth to a baby
that later died.
