Hit near Deer Park station in an apparent suicide, police say

By Samuel Bruchey - NY NewsDay - August 22, 2002

A man was killed early yesterday morning in Deer Park after being
struck by a Long Island Rail Road train, MTA and Suffolk police

Jason T. Bennett, 22, who police say was homeless, was hit by a
westbound train about 5:15 a.m. after he apparently stepped onto
the tracks from the north side, just east of the Deer Park
station, Det. Sgt. Kim Riley said.

"It appears to be a suicide," Riley said.

The only witness was the train's engineer, who told investigators
Bennett ignored the train whistle and looked directly at the engineer.

The train was traveling about 60 mph when Bennett was struck,
Riley said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was taken to the
Suffolk County medical examiner's office for an autopsy.

The 10-car train was filled with 700 commuters, who were
transferred to other trains.

The incident delayed a total of 27 trains by as much as one hour, Riley
