The Fire Department is investigating why it took an ambulance
more than half an hour to reach an upper Manhattan homeless
shelter in response to a suspected overdose by a teenager, an
FDNY source said last night.

Jason Wilson, 16, who lived with his family at the Dawn Hotel
homeless shelter on Saint Nicholas Place in Sugar Hill, died
Monday afternoon, the source said.

According to the source, the teen is believed to have had a
history of psychiatric problems, including depression and
anxiety.

Police said he overdosed on medication used to treat
schizophrenia.

The source said two calls were placed to 911 from the shelter.

The first was made about 4 p.m. but was categorized as "gone
before arrival," meaning paramedics couldn't find the victim.

A second call to 911 was made, but response was delayed when
problems arose in categorizing the call, the source said.

Paramedics arrived to find Jason alive, about 37 minutes after
the first call was made, the source said.

He was taken to Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, where he
was pronounced dead.

"We are aggressively investigating what happened here on the
response to his call," the FDNY source said.
