The battered body of a homeless man was found by social workers outside a
Forest Hill area subway station Tuesday night.
The 65-year-old man, known to street help workers as 'Bill,' was found
sprawled beside a subway emergency exit leading from the St. Clair West TTC
station, east of Bathurst St., about 10 p.m.
"He looked like he was beaten pretty bad. Like someone took a club to him,''
said Simon McNichol, a street help co-ordinator with the Native Men's
McNichol and two other workers had come to the ravine behind the subway
station on their rounds bringing food and clothing to homeless people, who
ususally take shelter just behind the south entrance to the subway.
At the sheltered emergency exit doors, where Bill and others usually spent
the night huddled under an overhang, rescue workers found his lifeless body
and signs of the attack. He apparently suffered severe head injuries.
Homicide detectives were called to the scene early today to investigate
Toronto's 44th slaying of the year.
