Third guilty plea in torching death

Thursday, October 18, 2001

The Associated Press

NEW YORK -- The youngest of three teenage boys accused of setting a homeless
man on fire has pleaded guilty to manslaughter, the Manhattan District
Attorney's Office said Wednesday.

Robert Velasquez, 14, entered the plea Tuesday in state Supreme Court in
Manhattan, spokeswoman Barbara Thompson said.

Walter Eakman, 47, died one day after the three youths allegedly torched his
clothing as he slept May 13 in a stairwell at the Chelsea Houses complex on
West 25th Street.

The other two youths entered guilty pleas last week.
