How does "social exclusion" affect the incidence of homelessness among gays? What economic interest groups benefit politically by such "social exclusion"? When replying, please treat facts and theories fairly -- and write in a tone of personal respect. HOMELESS By Associated Press -- November 22, 2001, 4:25 PM EST TUCSON, Ariz. -- A shelter that asked Rep. Jim Kolbe not to volunteer last Thanksgiving because he is gay welcomed him back to serve turkey to the homeless. "It's a great way to spend the day giving something back to the community that's given so much to me," Kolbe said. About 1,500 people, some homeless and others who couldn't afford a Thanksgiving dinner, showed up at the Gospel Rescue Mission on Wednesday. Kolbe, a Republican, has volunteered at the mission several times, but last year its board voted to ask him not to come. A letter to Kolbe from a mission board member said the decision was "based on your publicly announced sexual orientation that is diametrically opposite to admonitions in the Bible." When the snub became public, the group quickly recanted, apologized and invited him to this year's meal. "We're absolutely happy to have him. We're all here for the same reason, and that's to serve people who need the help," said Scott Munro, a spokesman for the mission. Kolbe declined to comment on the dispute. Instead, he passed out plates of food, chatted with diners, and briefly talked with reporters as a gospel group sang and swayed in the background. South Tucson resident Irene Garcia said she was glad to have the congressman help serve food. "He's a human being. He has a heart, just like everyone else. God made him just like he made us," she said.
