ALERT: Police raid shelter, arrest 31 for misdemeanor charges - Pontiac MI
USA (fwd)

Should nonprofits help police to arrest homeless people charged with
misdemeanors?

Should shelters require homeless people to give IDs & Social Security
numbers as a condition of service?

When homeless people give personal information to human service providers,
are providers' promises sufficient to protect our rights to
confidentiality? Please cite examples.

"Using a list of names and social security numbers provided by the shelter
a week ago, police identified about 50 people with 57 outstanding criminal
warrants living at the Huron Street facility, said Police Chief Larry
Miracle."

POLICE ARREST 32 AT HOMELESS SHELTER

BY HUGH McDIARMID JR. - FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER

Thirty-two arrests and a firestorm of finger-pointing followed a pre-dawn
raid on a Pontiac homeless shelter Tuesday.

The timing - as shelter officials press a contentious campaign to override
the city's denial of a proposed drug rehabilitation center for women - is
no coincidence say shelter proponents.

``This is political, this is harassment,'' said Kent Clark, director of the
Grace Centers of Hope, formerly called the Pontiac Rescue Mission.

More than two dozen officers awoke about 150 shelter residents when they
raided the shelter at 5 a.m.

Using a list of names and social security numbers provided by the shelter a
week ago, police identified about 50 people with 57 outstanding criminal
warrants living at the Huron Street facility, said Police Chief Larry
Miracle.

He said undercover officers had also made drug purchases inside the
facility during the past month.

Eighteen of the suspects were not at the facility when the police roundup
took place, including one man wanted for rape and another for robbery, he
said.

Of the 37 charges against those arrested, all but one were for misdemeanor
offenses like disturbing the peace, said Miracle. One felony charge, for
auto theft, was made.

Miracle angrily denounced critics who say the raid was political.

``It really disturbs me to be defending my department today,'' he said. ``I
just don't think that it should be a hiding haven for criminals who are
wanted.''

PASTOR FUMING OVER EARLY MORNING RAID

     POLICE BUST INTO PONTIAC MISSION

An early morning raid on the Pontiac Rescue Mission has its leader
screaming police harassment.

Officers bust into the not-for-profit mission about 5 a.m. Tuesday morning.
They arrested 32 people on assorted charges, ranging from robbery to rape.

Police received numerous complaints of drug activity at the mission,
according to police chief Larry Miracle.

Over 50 residents had warrants for their arrest, Miracle said.

The mission's leader, Pastor Kent Clark, said that he's always cooperated
with police beforehand, and that he's upset that they conducted Tuesday's
raid without allowing him to assist.

Clark said that the mission's doors are always open to police, and that he
wants to get the mission "out of the loop."

The mission provides help to those needing a boost getting back on their
feet, especially homeless single mothers and their children.
