VOTE! 2000 Campaign Update: Polling Will Include Disability!

Kudos to Andy Kohut and the Pew Research Center for
The People & The Press for including people with disabilities
in their upcoming survey on political participation. The Center
is an independent opinion research group that studies attitudes toward
the
press, politics and public policy issues. The Center
is an important resource for political leaders, journalists, scholars and
public interest organizations.

Watch their website www.people-press.org <http://www.people-press.org>
for
the survey which will posted by the end of June!

VOTE! 2000 Emphasis will encourage disabled Texans to vote

The National Organization on Disability's VOTE 2000! Campaign has a
worthwhile goal to achieve between now and Election Day, Nov. 7:
encouraging
an additional 700,000 citizens with disabilities to vote nationwide.

More than a third of those votes, 292,000, could be picked up in
Texas alone if citizens with disabilities voted at the same rate as other
citizens.

Nationwide, the figure would represent an estimated 4 million more
voters.

Federal Election Commission figures indicate 116,800 disabled
citizens are not registered to vote in Texas, and many polling places
remain
inaccessible (one out of six, nationwide), violating the Americans with
Disabilities Act.

This get-out-the-vote is aimed not only at encouraging and assisting
the disabled to register and vote, but also to monitor and emphasize
legal
obligations to disabled citizens.

Voter registration must remain simple and convenient, and sometimes
bureaucrats and service providers must be reminded of their role in
keeping
it that way. And, of course, polling places must be made accessible, no
exceptions.
