SASKATOON - More than 400 people attended vigils in two Saskatchewan cities
at the weekend. They were drawing attention to the deaths of five
aboriginal men who have died under suspicious circumstances.
The vigils were held in Saskatoon and Prince Albert.
RCMP are investigating the deaths of Rodney Naistus, Lawrence Wegner and
Neil Stonechild. They were found frozen to death on the outskirts opf
Saskatoon.
Two other men, Lloyd Joseph Dustyhorn and Darcy Dean Ironchild, while not
included in the investigation, were also honoured at the candlelight vigils.
Placards at the vigil in Saskatoon expressed feelings of betrayal at the
actions of city police. Two Saskatoon police officers have been suspended
with pay during the RCMP investigation.
Organizers of the vigils say they will hold demonstrations like this every
two weeks to try to get a public inquiry into the deaths.
