     FORMER SHELTER OFFICIAL ARRAIGNED IN ALLEGED THEFT

BOSTON (AP) _ A former official at the New England Shelter for
Homeless Veterans pleaded innocent to charges in the alleged theft
of more than $60,000 from the shelter.

Frank S. Ardagna, 50, the former chief financial officer of the
nonprofit corporation, was arraigned Wednesday in Suffolk Superior
Court on three counts of larceny over $250 and two forgery charges.

Ardagna worked for the shelter from May 1997 until January 1999.
Prosecutors alleged he used the $60,000 to pay personal credit card
debts. Ardagna was held on $25,000 cash bail. A pretrial conference
was set for March 10.

The shelter said in a statement that shelter officials ``have
worked closely with the attorney general's office and will continue
to do so until the case is brought to conclusion.''

The statement also said that the shelter had recovered 90
percent of the loss and anticipated a ``full recovery of funds.''

Ardagna's attorney, Bruce Carroll, didn't immediately return a
message seeking comment left at his office Wednesday evening.
