U2 PUTS WEIGHT BEHIND BIG ISSUE
ANNA TERESIA BOGARDH
Irish supergroup U2 has thrown its weight behind an
advertisement for a Cape Town magazine which supports the
homeless.
Forfeiting a fee of about R1,2 million, the band has allowed its
smash hit "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" to be
used in a TV ad for The Big Issue Cape Town.
The commercial has been shot on the streets of Cape Town by
national and international professionals, who all devoted their
time free of charge.
In the ad, British director Pete Case used unemployed Big Issue
vendors as actors who re-enacted typical street-life scenes to the
strains of the U2 song.
The band has also supported the Big Issue project in the UK.
"We've all experienced sitting in our car worrying about
everyday life's minor problems while pulling up to a robot.
Suddenly you realise that there are people who actually have
nothing, and some might live there, underneath the highway,
under the bridges," said Case.
The monthly Big Issue Cape Town is sold by trained homeless
and long-term unemployed people who buy the magazine for
R3,50 and sell it to the public for R6,50.
