    There, but by the grace of GOD, go I. How can anyone look into the =
face of another human being in need and just walk away without feeling =
something? We are all human, yet I think so many people find status =
more important than their fellow man. I don't know about you, but I =
could not turn away another human being, just because of his social =
standing.=20

    It only takes a moment to acknowledge them as a human being. A =
smile, a kind word, a free meal.=20

    Just think of the insane people you deal with in the work force on a =
day to day basis. The furious boss, who threatens to can everyone. The =
file clerk who tends to talk about guns a bit too freely. If you can =
deal with them, why can't you deal with someone who is 'homeless'? You =
might be pleasantly surprised, like the lady in this story. To find a =
gift from GOD when you do.=20

       GOD WORKS IN MYSTERIOUS WAYS=20

      This is a first-person account from a mother about her family as =
they=20
       ate dinner on Christmas Day in a small restaurant many miles from =

       their home.=20

       Nancy, the mother, relates:=20

      We were the only family with children in the restaurant. I sat =
Erik in=20
      a high chair and noticed everyone was quietly eating and talking.=20
      Suddenly, Erik squealed with glee and said, "Hi there." He pounded =
his=20
      fat baby hands on the highchair tray. His eyes were wide with =
excitement=20
      and his mouth was bared in a toothless grin. He wriggled and =
giggled with=20
      merriment.=20

       I looked around and saw the source of his merriment. It was a man =
with=20
      a tattered rag of a coat, dirty, greasy and worn. His pants were =
baggy=20
      with a zipper at half-mast and his toes poked out of would be =
shoes. His=20
       shirt was dirty and his hair was uncombed and unwashed. His =
whiskers were=20
      too short to be called a beard and his nose was so varicose, it =
looked=20
       like a road map. We were too far from him to smell, but I was =
sure he=20
      smelled. His hands waved and flapped on loose wrists. "Hi there, =
baby;=20
      hi there, big boy.=20

      I see ya, buster," the man said to Erik. My husband and I =
exchanged=20
      looks, "What do we do?" Everyone in the restaurant noticed and =
looked=20
      at us and then at the man. The old geezer was creating a nuisance =
with=20
      my beautiful baby. Our meal came and the man began shouting from =
across=20
      the room, "Do ya know patty cake? Do you know peek-a-boo? Hey, =
look, he=20
      knows peek-a boo. Nobody thought the old man was cute. He was=20
      obviously drunk. My husband and I were embarrassed. We ate in =
silence,=20
      all except for Erik, who was running through his repertoire for =
the=20
      admiring skid-row bum, who in turn, reciprocated with his cute =
comments.=20

      We finally got through the meal and headed for the door. My =
husband=20
      went to pay the check and told me to meet him in the parking lot. =
The=20
      old man sat poised between the door and me. "Lord, just let me out =
of=20
      here before he speaks to me or Erik," I prayed. As I drew closer =
to the=20
      man, I turned my back trying to sidestep him and avoid any air he =
might=20
      be breathing. As I did, Erik leaned over my arm, reaching with =
both arms=20
      in a baby's pick-me-up position.  Before I could stop him, Erik =
had=20
      propelled himself from my arms to the man's.=20

       Suddenly a very old smelly man and a very young baby consummated =
their=20
      love relationship. Erik, in an act of total trust, love, and=20
      submission laid his tiny head upon the man's ragged shoulder. The =
man's=20
      eyes closed and I saw tears hover beneath his lashes. His aged =
hands full=20
      of grime, pain and hard labor-gently, so gently cradled my baby's =
bottom=20
      and stroked his back.=20

       No two beings have ever loved so deeply for so short a time. I =
stood=20
      awestruck. The old man rocked and cradled Erik in his arms for a=20
      moment, and then his eyes opened and set squarely on mine. He said =
in=20
      a firm commanding voice, "You take care of this baby." Somehow I =
managed,=20
      "I will," from a throat that contained a stone. He pried Erik from =
his=20
      chest unwillingly, longingly, as though he were in pain. I =
received my=20
      baby, and the man said, "God bless you, ma'am, you've given me my=20
      Christmas=20
      gift."=20

       I said nothing more than muttered thanks. With Erik in my arms, I =
ran=20
      for the car. My husband was wondering why I was crying and holding =

      Erik so tightly, and why I was saying, "My God, my God, forgive =
me." I=20
      had just witnessed Christ's love shown through the innocence of a =
tiny=20
      child who saw no sin, who made no judgment, a child who saw a =
soul, and=20
      a mother who saw a suit of clothes.=20

       I was a Christian who was blind, holding a child who was not. I =
felt=20
      it was God asking...."Are you willing to share your son for a =
moment?",=20
      when HE shared His for an eternity. The ragged old man, =
unwittingly,=20
      had reminded me, "To enter the Kingdom of God, we must become as =
little=20
      children."=20
