Homelessness Isn't Chic
Newsweek International, February 7, 2000
When John Galliano presented his "Hobo Chic" couture collection for
Christian Dior last month, he said he wanted to prove that "a tiara made
of candy wrappers is as valuable as one made of diamonds." The French
homeless community saw it differently: last week they staged a protest
in front of Dior headquarters in Paris. More than 40 activists and
homeless stormed the flagship store, bearing signs that read CYNICISM
ISN'T COOL! and chanting "Respect the homeless." The shoppers inside
bolted for the doors. One protester was injured, and French riot police
were called in to restore calm. Dior reportedly invited several
protesters inside to talk. "They offered us money," scoffed one
trash-bag-clad demonstrator. "But we want their apology in the press."
Dior is mum.
