Tampa police charge man in aerosol can explosion

Associated Press

TAMPA - A homeless man accused of tossing an aerosol can into a
campfire, injuring four people when it exploded, has been charged with
attempted murder.

James Daryl Sprague, 39, was charged with four counts of attempted
murder, said Hillsborough County Sheriff's Sgt. Rod Reder. Sprague was
taken to the county jail. Bond had not been set yesterday.

Friday's explosion caused mostly minor injuries. However, the extent
of injuries was not a factor in the charges.

"Any normal person should have known that the can of hair spray would
explode in the fire," Reder said. "If anyone had been killed, he would
have been charged with manslaughter."

The incident occurred early Friday morning after deputies William
Pettit and Chris White were sent to investigate a report of someone
being attacked in a wooded area.

The deputies were talking to people who were gathered around a
campfire when Sprague tossed the hair spray can into it, Reder said.
The deputies and two others were momentarily caught in the fireball
caused by the explosion, he said. White and Tina McBride, 36, received
minor burns and didn't require treatment. Pettit and Alan Tillman, 38,
suffered burns to the head and face and were sent to the hospital.
