Welfare Information Network Gears Up for TANF
Reauthorization Debate

December 20, 2000

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF),
established by the 1996 welfare reform legislation, is
up for re-authorization by September 2002. The Welfare
Information Network has created a new Web resource to
facilitate the thoughtful discussion of the issues
regarding the next stages of welfare, workforce, and
income security reform in the United States.

While the creation of the site is in response to the
need to reauthorize the Temporary Assistance to Needy
Families (TANF) block grant prior to September 30,
2002, the site will focus on a broader range of issues
regarding federal policy for low-income families,

* Childcare assistance for low-income families
* Child welfare services
* Earned income tax credits
* Education and training for
  low-income workers
* Family preservation and foster care
* Food stamps and other nutrition assistance
* Health care assistance for low-income
  families and children
* Minimum wage
* Housing assistance for low-income families
* Subsidies for creating entry level
  employment opportunities
* Transportation assistance for low-income

WIN is particularly interested in identifying
materials that discuss emerging policy issues and that
suggest policy proposals that may be advanced during
the upcoming reauthorization process. Please e-mail
your suggestions to Michelle Ganow: mganow@financeproject.org
