What you term a disgusting display of American incivility was in fact the
only proper response to remove Elian from people who were not his legal
guardians, nor were they acting in his best interests. The crowd around
him had vowed to not let anyone take him at all, and had vowed to use
whatever means necessary to keep Elian in a place that he didn't belong -
his place was by his father's side, not with people who used - and abused
- the kid for personal gain.
And as for the police carrying guns - how are they supposed to keep the
peace when gangsters and thugs often have greater fire power than they do.
Some police action is inappropriate, but not all.
